Back at the beginning of 2007 there was an article on CNET talking about the first terabyte hard drive models about to be released from Hitachi and Seagate. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000 cost $399 when it came out! Here at the beginning of 2012 a same size drive costs around a quarter of that. But just what is a terabyte?
A Terabyte is approximately one trillion bytes, or 1000 Gigabytes (in standard SI usage).
- 1 Bit = Binary Digit
- 8 Bits = 1 Byte
- 1000 Bytes = 1 Kilobyte
- 1000 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte
- 1000 Megabytes = 1 Gigabyte
- 1000 Gigabytes = 1 Terabyte
How Much Can It Hold?
A 1 Terabyte hard drve can hold about 3.6 million 300 Kilobyte images, or about 2000 hours of CD quality audio or about 300 hours of good quality video. A Terabyte could hold 1000 copies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Ten Terabytes could hold the printed collection of the Library of Congress. That’s a lot of data.
